Kemp recalls stepping in to spare Dylan a beating from Stephen Stills
AT a 1954 Minnesota children’s summer camp talent night, Louie Kemp witnessed what may have been Bob Dylan’s very first live performance; the 13-year-old performed a slightly near-the-knuckle original, “Annie Had A Baby”, rather than the more crowd-pleasing “Kumbaya”. When Kemp asked him why his audience hadn’t bayed for more, Bobby Zimmerman replied tersely: “They’re squares.”
