DRIVE›B TRUCNERS

ATO

8/10

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS released the immediate predecessor to The Unraveling, American Band, in September 2016. It was their least politically compromising album to date, an angry, wounded indictment of the perennial manias of the United States – guns, God and race – and their amplification by the presidential run of an obnoxious populist yahoo.

Drive-By Truckers could have followed with the “I told you so” album; they haven’t. They couldtrack titles: “Armageddon’s Back In Town”, “Babies In Cages”, “Thoughts And Prayers”, “Grievance Merchants”, “21st Century USA”. The title of the album is a deliberate or accidental echo of George Packer’s marginally pre-Trump book – which is, as is, an unsparing and astute contemplation of where it all went wrong.
