Back in the early 1980s I picked up a pair of heated socks while visiting a hunting store in the USA. I thought that they would be ‘just the job’ as I’ve always felt the cold. They contained elements under the toes of each foot, powered by wires running up to two D-cell batteries in a waist pouch.

They worked after a fashion, but the coarse nylon socks were hugely uncomfortable to walk any distance in, the amount of heat delivered was unreliable and the batteries ran out in no time. I gave up on
