Tony Banks is recounting a familiar tale about one of the seven solo albums he released between 1979 and 1995 – commercially neglected but often creatively vibrant affairs that have now been collected in Banks Vaults along with a collection of their promo videos.
“The last album barely even saw the light of day – I’ve still got a lot of the copies here. And that’s one reason I’m glad to have it all in a box set. Also, people know about Genesis but they don’t always know that many of the early sounds were down to me, so I wanted another chance to show people my own stuff for those who might appreciate it.”
The Banks solo story starts with Genesis on a sort of hiatus. “Steve Hackett had already done one and it was something I’d wanted to do for a while, then Phil [Collins] was having troubles in his marriage and wanted to take a break for a bit, so Mike [Rutherford] and I thought, this is the moment we’ve waited a long time for…”
