Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux 5.5-rc1 and the closure of the “merge window” for Linux 5.5. The new kernel gains several features, both user/ programmer visible and internal to the kernel.

On the visible front, a few legacy interfaces have been deprecated or removed ( through emulation, and by removal). Meanwhile, internal changes include the wholesale replacement of the scheduler load balancer, which could end up being very visible to users if it impacts performance.
