Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a much stranger film than its cult status and influence suggests. Its formula is more experimental and sensation-focused than we may imagine when considering the iconic figure of the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface.
It is a film about cannibals, but they are not its main source of terror. More frightening is their deformed vision of the American nuclear family. Hooper
