“Without your space helmet, Dave, you’re going to find it very difficult,” says HAL 9000, the malevolent AI in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A As the laws of survival go, no truer words have been spoken. As wacky and wild as science fiction costume design may be, no intergalactic traveller would be safe gliding through the infinite void without a helmet. On screen, that gear is as visionary as it is utilitarian, both a symbol of mankind’s bold foray into the unknown and a practical tool for survival.
