Almost 15 million square kilometres of Earth’s ground is frozen solid. Permafrost covers nearly as much of the planet as Russia does. Soil, silt or clay must stay at zero degrees Celsius or lower for two years to qualify as permafrost, and it’s over one kilometre thick in parts
