Depth of field is one of the first things we learn about when we start taking photographs. This relates to the relationship between the selected aperture value and how much of an image is in focus.
Wide apertures like f/1.8 will produce a shallow depth of field, and are often favoured by portrait photographers, who want a crisply defined subject and a soft blurry background. Landscape photographers tend to favour narrower apertures like f/11, which create larger depths of field, allowing more of the image to appear in focus.
