Our wild pheasants have had a good summer. The hatch came after the worst of the rain, and we found chicks in good numbers when the roses bloomed in June. That was haymaking time; the weeks which lead up to the Royal Highland Show. I was bent double over the tractor, sweating in the glare of sunshine and dried grass.
Oystercatchers trilled along the seashore and shelducks gabbled in the mud with gangs of youngsters
