WHOLE LOTTA POPPIN’ GOIN’ ON!

Did you know that humans first invented alcohol at least 9,000 years ago? We can be sure of this because archaeologists have found the residue of wine made from rice, honey and fruit in Chinese pottery that dates back to this period, although there’s no record of whether or not they also found the bones of the poor sap who didn’t wash it up properly.

Given that all alcohol, no matter what the end product, is created in pretty much the same way – yeast breaks down fermentable sugars into ethanol – we don’t need to know how it was invented. The harder question is why – unless, of course, you’ve had to endure one of my family Christmases.
