The Critters are supposed to be little horrific bastards,” director Bobby Miller tells SFX. “They’re terrifying until they do something dumb. And when they do something dumb, that’s when we’re allowed to be a little funny.”

Almost three decades have passed since the last instalment of Critters – the sci-fi comedy horror series about the carnivorous Krites, aliens who hunt their prey by curling up into balls. The movies went in an increasingly different direction over the course of four feature films, but Miller is keen to bring the fifth chapter, Critters Attack!, back to basics.

“You have stuff with the subtitles in the first one, when the Critters are yelling, ‘Fuck!’ It’s clearly comedic,” he explains. “And that’s what I hope to do tonally with this one. It’s really hard
