LIKE SUPERHEROES? IF YOU DO, THEN IN 2019 THERE’S certainly no shortage of them. Film, television, animation, comics… name the medium and there’s something for everyone.

Or is there? Look at who toplines those superhero TV shows and movies, and none of them feature openly LGBTQ lead characters. None.

The Big Two – Marvel and DC – first tackled better LGBTQ representation in earnest with Northstar back in 1992, and have since followed up with A-list characters like Midnighter and Miss America. But it’s taken until this year for The CW’s Batwoman to cast a non-binary actor, Ruby Rose, in a starring role as the queer lead in a superhero series.
