Perfect Storms

“Are you sure there are no sharks in this section of the river?” I ask our guide, my wetsuited legs dangling into the water. Stanford Skosana flashes me a broad smile. “Don’t worry, sharks can’t get up through the rocks to these high pools.” My question is only half in jest.

Shortly after paddling out from the slipway at Storms River Mouth, on the first leg of our three-part journey up the Storms River Gorge, we‘re surprised when a bronze whaler shark breaches 100 metres away. There are apex predators in these parts.
