The sun slips behind one of the mountains that ring Graaff-Reinet, and finally the forge-like heat of the Karoo day relents. A breath of coolth. The sky turns a deeper blue and the birds gather twittering in the flamboyant trees and yucca plants along Acacia Street in Kroonvale.
By day, you wouldn’t pick out this street as anything special. It’s an ordinary part of Kroonvale, a short drive from Graaff-Reinet’s central thoroughfare. The houses and gardens are parched by the drought, but well-tended. There are people on the stoeps, catching the slight evening breeze. A group of teenagers saunters
