A GUIDE TO Extending a semi-detached home
Almost one third (32 per cent) of the UK population live in semi-detached houses, according to Barratt Homes*. That’s more than live in detached houses (25 per cent), terraces (26 per cent), and flats (14 per cent). But while semis can make great family homes, the living and bedroom arrangements can be far from what we want today, while the floor area can feel constrained.
Happily, extending a semidetached house – whether on the ground floor only or with a two-storey addition – has the potential to both add square meterage and transform an old-fashioned floorplan. It could also solve a problem semis share with detached and terraced houses of a poor connection to the garden.
Before you start, take note that for the project to be successful, the rights of neighbours need to be borne in mind, as does the possibility of limited access to the rear of your home for the duration of the build. Bringing light to the centre of your house once you’ve added on to the back also requires good design solutions. To avoid the pitfalls, and achieve the best outcome, read on for our top tips – and take a look at the homes of three semi-dwelling readers who extended their homes with brilliant results.
