The baffling disappearance of Australia’s 17th prime minister, Harold Holt, has become a staple of Australian folklore.
On December 17, 1967, 59-year-old Harold and his friend Alan Stewart entered the heavy surf at Cheviot Beach in Portsea, Victoria, for an afternoon swim.
As friends watched on from the shoreline, Harold swam deeper into the crashing ocean and slipped under the waves, never to be seen again.
Alan emerged from the water, but Harold simply vanished.
