New American Paintings

Over the past few years, I have been participating in conversations with colleagues at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (where I work) and others at museums throughout the country about a contemporary perspective on what constitutes American art. One major impetus has been the staging of a large-scale regional initiative called Pacific Standard Time LA/LA, which in its attempt to frame Latinx and Latin- American art asks where “America” begins and ends.
