The mighty Z 6 and Z 7 mirrorless cameras have been a runaway success. Coupled with Nikon’s similarly overachieving Z-mount lenses, they’ve taken image quality to new heights. But not everyone wants a full-frame camera. The DX – or APS-C – format enables a more compact, lightweight build for both camera bodies and lenses alike, while boosting telephoto reach and giving a greater depth of field.
These are traits that are often preferred for travel, sports and wildlife photography, as well as for shooting on an everyday basis. The clincher is that DX format bodies and lenses tend to be more affordable.
Enter the Z 50, Nikon’s first DX format mirrorless system camera. It has a tough act to follow, considering the excellence of the Z 6 and Z 7 but, body for body, the full-frame cameras are about two or three times as expensive, respectively. Add to that the relatively inexpensive 16-50mm and 50-250mm kit zoom lenses for the Z 50, and the new camera could be a steal.
