Jeff Mitchell
Jeff Mitchell Profile
• Jeff Mitchell started his illustrious career at the Helensburgh Advertiser as a teenager in the late 1980s.
• He has covered countless international stories for Getty Images, including the Middle East migrant crisis, the gilet jaune riots in Paris and Ukraine’s 2014 revolution.
• His photographs have been honoured with numerous industry awards, including UK News Photographer of the Year and Getty Images European Press Photographer of the Year.
• When not shooting hard news, Jeff uses his downtime to shoot Scottish landscapes and traditions. “It’s a great way to put the brakes on,” he says.
It’s an overcast day in late August when Jeff Mitchell and I meet at a corner street café in Partick, three miles west of Glasgow city centre. Only a few decades ago, these red sandstone terraced streets were home to the shipyard workers who sweated their trade on the banks of the River Clyde. Today, you are more likely to bump into a group of university students or young professionals who frequent this café for a vegetarian breakfast, famed on TripAdvisor for its chilli oil and halloumi topping. How times have changed…
Jeff should know as well as anyone, he is a son of these parts. Born and raised just outside of Dumbarton, 12 miles west of Glasgow, he has witnessed many of the social changes his city has undergone since the demise of its industrial base. Our conversation spans his life in photography, from the film days of local Scottish newspapers, to his current position as an award-winning photographer for Getty Images. Jeff has just flown in from Biarritz where he was covering the 45th G7 Summit, but as we speak an even bigger story is unfolding in London
