EVER SINCE RAY BOOTH and his client began their work together eighteen years ago, they have been speaking the same language. Each of them refers to it as simpatico, the Italian word that means a comradeship, a mutual understanding of each other.

“The moment Ray saw this place,” says the homeowner, completed projects. “I’d been cutting out photos of Ray’s projects for years because his designs inspired my own decorating,” says the homeowner. When he arrived at the two-story maisonette on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, she didn’t even know that he was the man from those articles.
