Australian metalcore marauders expand their toolbox
NORTHLANE ARE A broadly influenced metalcore band from Sydney, Australia who formed in 2009. Of the four studio albums to their name, Discoveries and Singularity were the most spirited and chunky, while Node and Mesmer sounded somehow flatter and safer. Beyond the vocal impact of Marcus Bridge replacing founding frontman Adrian Fitipaldes in 2014, the band’s musical style has changed significantly over time and Alien introduces another dramatic shift. The sound is rich, the production is squeaky-clean, and they have welcomed back a heavier, groovier sound thanks to new bassist and backing vocalist Brendon Padjasek. However, the move from djent to more electronic and nu metal influences is fairly decisive, and the result is a rather polarising mix of the mindblowing and the cringeworthy.
