The glass-walled, rooftop restaurant at the Kempinski Hotel Moika is a sight to behold – super-stylish with a whiff of imperial grandeur. High above the city of St Petersburg, we’re afforded a panoramic view of Russia’s surprisingly colourful second city; to our right, a block away and peeking between buildings, we can see the gilded, mint green walls of the opulent Winter Palace. “You can tell the fish story…” says Rammstein vocalist Till Lindemann, leaning towards his bandmate, Hypocrisy and Pain’s Peter Tägtgren, with a mischievous glint in his eye.
We’ve just asked the duo to describe the handful of gigs they’ve played so far as their side-project, Lindemann, but as Peter gives Till a distinct ‘Do you really want to go there?’ look, we’re almost nervous to hear what’s coming next. Till attempts to clear up the confusion. “On the very last song [of the set - Fish On], I got this little drum and started cutting fishes and throwing the pieces to people,” he explains.
