WILD LIONS

For almost anyone, particularly a first-timer going on an African safari, the species that would top the list of priority sightings is probably the lion. Lions capture the imagination with the grace of their movements and their awesome power, which enables them to kill prey as large as buffalo and giraffe, and sometimes even a young elephant. The powerful roar of the lion at night is one of the characteristic sounds of wildest Africa.

« Ian John Whyte is an independent environmental consultant who retired from SANParks in 2007. He was previously engaged in full-time wildlife research in Kruger National Park from 1970-2007.
