The legendary Queen’s reign lasted from 1837 until 1901, and in portrayals of her in popular media such as film, television, and books, the Queen has often been portrayed as a dowdy, humorless, woman. Victoria’s famous (and possibly apocryphal) phrase, “we are not amused,” and the unsmiling face that we see in official portraits, are often taken as symbols for all that was wrong with the stiff, starched era that bears her name, and she herself is depicted as essentially lacking in deep emotions or passions, something underlined by her lifelong attachment to her deceased husband, Albert.
