While the high-school-set coming-of-age story is hardly new, it’s had a bona fide revival, with a decidedly woke bent. Consider, on the more extreme end of the spectrum, HBO drama ; but also the hit film , which has a gay lead character and an awkward same-sex-hookup scene; and Netflix series and , the latter beloved for its depiction of autism. Even Gwyneth Paltrow made an unforeseen return to acting — which is not based on current White House antics but those of a 12th-grader with hopes to be student body president — and HBO Max (which launches in May) commissioned a “modern-day high-school dramedy” from Lena Dunham’s production company, Good Thing Going.
