“It may not be generally known that within a day’s journey of the metropolis there grow the loftiest trees of Australia, and perhaps of the world…” – The Illustrated Australian News for Home, 3rd March 1868 are the magnificent mountain ash (), found only in Victoria and Tasmania. As the world’s tallest hardwood, they were highly prized for their timber as well as their record-breaking heights. Thankfully, there are still places close to the ‘metropolis’ of Melbourne to see them. I’ve decided to visit some of the oldest and most iconic mountain ash trees on three short walks: the Cumberland Walk, Ada Tree Walk and Kalatha Giant Tree Walk.
