Research presented at the European Congress on Obesity has found that obesity can be a risk factor for anxiety and depression in young people. Researchers analysed data from more than 12,000 children and teens aged six to 17 from the Swedish Childhood Obesity Treatment Register, and compared them to more than 60,000 of their peers who didn’t have obesity. They found that girls who were obese were 43 percent more likely to experience anxiety or depression, while boys were 33 percent more likely.
