Wilderness within reach
The R62 through the Little Karoo passes a number of mountain ranges – Warmwaterberg, Langeberg, Swartberg, Rooiberg – and as you drive along, you’ll see many tempting kloofs carved into their flanks.
One such kloof – Tierkloof – is in the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve between Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn. This is where rangers like Cornelius Julies, Tom Horne, Willem Goemas and Tom Barry have been working for 20 years to protect a slice of true natural splendour. Before them, Cornelius and Tom Horne’s fathers and grandfathers helped to establish the conservation area, which is now 800 km² in size (only 110 km² is open to the public). Their hard work is paying off: Gamkaberg is part of a World Heritage Site; it appears in Africa’s Finest, a book about the top 50 sustainable safari destinations south of the Sahara; and the Tierkloof Hiking Trail has been listed in Unforgettable Walks to Take Before You Die, published by BBC Books.
It’s a blisteringly hot day
