South Coast fever

We’ve always been South Coast people. My dad never liked the Cape because he hates wind, and besides, the rest of our family lives in Johannesburg. We always went to the KZN South Coast instead, to Port Edward specifically.

I once asked my dad why he always chose Port Edward. “It has the best beach in Natal!” he said with authority.

The real reason was that the caravan park belonged to the police. My brother was a police officer so we got a discount: R15 per night for a caravan stand. And if you knew Koos Grové (the commander of the Linden station, now retired), he would organise you a camping freezer, too.
