From my car window, the blurred scenery flashed by. The kloof didn’t have a clear beginning; the mountain peak was guarded by sheer cliffs. It seemed like an inaccessible paradise as I drove though the Du Toitskloof Pass and completely missed the turn-off to the Breedekloof. Only when I reached Worcester did I realise my mistake.

Soon enough, I’d slowed down to a Breedekloofer’s pace. During my stay, I noticed travellers zoom by on the N1 and lamented that they didn’t realise how easy it was to head into those ‘hills’ – with a mountain bike, fishing rod or wine glass to help.

As the locals say, the Breedekloof includes everything
