SMITH’S BE READY PACK PAL
R225, awesometools.co.za This handy survival tool, complete with carabiner clip, covers the bases your Leatherman doesn’t – it has a knife sharpener, whistle and fire starter. I’ve watched enough Survivor to know that having flint is better than not having any, but it can be tricky to get a spark – I did eventually get the braai fire started after certain exciting rugby matches recently. The carbide sharpener was easier and effective, but only on flat blades. The Pack Pal fits in the palm of my hand, and weighs just 25g, so I’d imagine people with larger hands might find it a little fiddly, but better to have this gadget than not, right? CAROLINE WEBB
KLEAN KANTEEN INSULATED TK WIDE
R485, awesometools.co.za This 473ml flask is the right size for coffee on-the-go or to stash in your daypack side pocket while you hike. Made of stainless steel and leak-proof, it’s easy to clean so it can be used for coffee in the morning, then an ice-cold drink on the beach later. I liked its textured feel and solidity, and it still looked good even after being banged around over a weekend hike. The coffee was still piping hot more than 12 hours later, after I opened the flask once. The bonus is that it’s BPA-free and has long-term use. LOUISE TOPPING
GSI OUTDOORS MICROLITE 1000 TWIST
R699, This flask holds a surprising amount (a litre) and is lighter and smaller than other flasks with the same capacity, so it’s handy for picnics and to take on long hikes. It comes in a textured finish in six colours and the lid has a silicone seal which prevents leaks. My coffee was still steaming hot after 18 hours (way longer than needed) but it can also be used to keep drinks
