THE LURE OF WHITING
Targeting whiting on lures is an exciting and productive means of catching these estuary beauties. Whilst not recognised as a premier sports fish, whiting have a never say die attitude and on light tackle they put up a fight that seems out of proportion to their size. Long runs are not in the equation, but there are plenty of darts and dashes all the way to the way back and decent fish (40 cm +) will pull string. A big whiting is known as an “elbow slapper” for good reason ... they continue to fight whilst hooks are removed!

Casting surface lures at whiting is an exciting way to target these little silver shots. Non-stop retrieves, surface hits, multiple hook-ups and the banter that comes with visuals on the chaos is more akin to throwing stick baits and poppers at GTs and Spanish mackerel than a session in an Australian estuary.
When in the mood, whiting slam surface lures without hesitation and it’s not uncommon for a pack of these bad boys to lock onto a lure and race each other to first crack of the prize. Like
