CALM WATER ROCK HOPPING
People go fishing for different reasons but catching a feed of fresh fish is a fundamental motive for a lot of our fishing pursuits. I love my sportfishing, but I also really enjoy grass-roots fishing and I gain a lot of satisfaction from taking home a feed of fresh fish to prepare and cook for my family. Hunting and providing is still a deep-rooted motivation for many of us.
But it’s not always practical to launch the boat when time is limited, and that’s where a quick land based session is ideal to fill that time. I’m pretty fortunate to have a big bay system on my doorstep which offers plenty of calm-water rock locales in which to hunt a feed. Similarly around our country, you don’t have to venture far to find a rock ledge or two tucked inside a river mouth, in the lee of a headland, inside a sheltered bay or boat ramp harbour.
The water fronting these rocky locales isn’t generally as deep as some of the more exposed, high energy ledges, but that certainly doesn’t detract from the fishing. There are still some very productive and rewarding fishing available from our
