THE FIRST STEAL __ Shoplifters begins with Osamu (Lily Franky) and Shota (Jyo Kairi) pilfering food from a supermarket. “There’s no dialogue; it’s all action,” says writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who studied CCTV footage of shoplifting ahead of filming to make the act seem authentic. “We staged the scene so that they always had eye contact; so they could understand each other even if they weren’t speaking.”
