After years of struggle, his next movie, an ingenious-looking take on , is one of the most anticipated of 2020, while his last, the cyberpunk horror thriller , has steadily grown its reach and reputation as one of the best cult movies of recent years. The title of that movie doesn’t appear to have been an accident — from the movies to the franchise, Whannell has upgraded his career an inch at a time. Here, he tells us how he did it.
