In over 45 years of deer hunting, I cannot honestly think of one whitetail (or mule deer for that matter) that tasted bad because of the deer’s age, gender, body status, habitat or feeding habits.
A skinny, old Illinois “gummer” doe I once arrowed in the bitter cold of late bow season was as tender a deer as I’ve ever eaten. One rank Wisconsin buck that had been rutting hard and running every doe in the neighborhood for weeks provided venison as sweet as my family has ever eaten.
