Barolo 2015

1 WINE OF THE VINTAGE Aldo Conterno, Romirasco, Bussia, Monforte d’Alba 95

£85.99 Liberty Wines

Romirasco, a 3.8ha hilltop site overlooking the winery, is usually the most structured of the Conterno wines. Dense, powerful aromas of very ripe but not cooked cherry and raspberry. Although structured and concentrated, it’s broad and fleshy with formidable tannins that are far from angular. Very long and built to last. Conterno’s Colonello, Bussia scored 92 points. Drink 2022-2040 Alcohol 15%

Bruno Giacosa, Vigna Le Rocche, Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba 94

£172.68-£250 Armit, BI, Harvey Nichols

Le Rocche is a selection from the highest parcels in Falletto which gives its great finesse. The redcurrant-raspberry nose shows great purity and poise. The palate is equally elegant, with polished tannins and a silky, intense texture. There’s ample tannic grip but it’s not aggressive and there are none of the rough edges often apparent in Serralunga. Balanced and very long. Drink 2020-2040 Alc 14.5%

2 Paolo Conterno, Ginestra, Monforte d’Alba 94

Giorgio Conterno did a fine job with his 2014 Ginestra and this vintage is magnificent too. Tasted from cask, it’s still reticent but has brooding cherry aromas. It’s ripe and fleshy on the concentrated palate, with elegant tannins and a long, stylish finish. Perfectly balanced, with neither softness or toughness. Drink 2021-2040 Alc 14.5%

Poderi Luigi Einaudi, Cannubi, Barolo 94

Einaudi always makes an excellent wine from this celebrated vineyard. It was aged first in barriques, then in large casks. The red-fruited nose is smoky and vibrant with oak evident, but there’s also floral charm. The attack is assertive, but the tannins are finely tuned and discreet, giving the wine polish and vigour. Punchy and very long. The Bussia, Monforte d’Alba is also good at 92 points. Drink 2020-2038 Alc 14.5%

3 Vietti, Lazzarito, Serralunga d’Alba 94

£154 Exel

Vietti was bought by a US company in 2016 but2021-2038 14%

Montepulciano
Astaple of pizzerias across the land, Montepulciano is a grape variety that everyone knows but few love. Despite being the second most-planted red grape in Italy, it has struggled to be taken as anything other than good-value ‘house wine’. This panel
