The first time a rider from the Reynolds team (the precursor to Movistar) sat astride a bike equipped with Campagnolo and turned a pedal in anger, Ronald Reagan was the US president, Prince Charles and Diana Spencer had just got married and Survivor were just months away from releasing their hit Eye of the Tiger.
So it’s kind of a big deal that the Spanish-Italian couple have finally parted ways — they lasted more than three times longer than Charles and Diana. Movistar has had its head turned by a younger American suitor in the shape of SR AM, whose Red eTap AXS HRD groupset is something of a game-changer. It’s not the first wireless set-up (that honour goes to the old Red eTap groupset) or the first to offer 12 speeds (Campag beat it to that one) but it is the first to rethink gear ratios in a substantial way, using smaller chainrings to offer a wider range of gearing
