THE HAM NOTEBOOK
Continuing my loose theme on components and construction, this month I decided to share some of the techniques I use when making, restoring, or repairing electronic gear. Many of these hints are not new ideas, but I think this will make a useful resource for homebrewers and do-it-yourself folks.
It might be good to know these techniques are useful for both building and “un-building” things.
First Things First: Safety
First, a word about safety, especially since people and companies these days want to prevent injuries and prevent the long-term effects of the chemicals and by-products used in electronic equipment.
Most of us have common sense and know how to avoid getting hurt, but we often ignore our inner voice when under pressure to get something built or fixed quickly, like at Field Day, during a contest or for other reasons. Ignoring safety rules to get something done fast is a risk with bad consequences.
Protect your senses and body parts with proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Eye protection — goggles/glasses are).
