Bringing New Life to Old Radios

y first exposure to a 1970s-era mobile transceiver came in the mid-1980s when I was given a Midland 13-509 220-MHz radio (). Although the Midland was a solid workhorse, the time came when newer radios with more options made it somewhat obsolete. Some of these extras were (for me) non-critical (like scanning), but there were other features like sub-audible tone signaling (PL®, or CTCSS) that became important. The point arrived where I had to decide: Do I spend money on a new radio, and let the older radio go to waste? Or do I see what I can do to revive and update the old rig?
