SWEET & TASTY SOURDOUGH

More and more people are baking their own breads these days, for a few simple reasons — it’s less expensive, it’s healthier and better-tasting, it makes the house smell amazing, and it’s rewarding. It’s also not as intimidating as most people think. All you need is a little time, some patience, and some great recipes.

QUICK SOURDOUGH STARTER

Yields 1 portion.

1/2 cup warm water (105 to 115 F)
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 package (.25 ounce) active dry yeast
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole-wheat flour
3/4 cup water

1 In a glass measuring cup, combine water and sugar. Stir in yeast, and let proof for 5 to 15 minutes, or until 1/ 2 inch of bubbly foam forms
