It was hot and muggy, as afternoons in New Jersey in July tend to be, but it was just possible that a few shorebirds would be on the move, so I headed on out to Strawberry Avenue, home to a quarter-mile boardwalk suspended over the Delaware Bay estuary. Typically, I have the place to myself. Not this time. A pickup truck bearing conservation vanity plates was in the lot. At the end of the boardwalk was the presumed driver.
