OUT OF THE BLUE

[ Paddington ]

INTERIOR DESIGNER Fiona Lynch was tasked with adding a more playful and relaxed feel to this home split over four levels in Sydney’s Paddington. fionalynch.com.au

The grand Victorian terrace The existing design solutions worked functionally but weren’t cohesive. Rather than strip out existing joinery, we relined, refinished and overlaid pieces with new finishes to make them look more intentional and resolved. We introduced textured natural materials, colour accents and lighter tones to the otherwise austere and masculine palette, increasing the sense of warmth and personality. Drawing on a palette of brass, blackened steel, painted solid oak and natural stone, the interior is peppered with texture and pattern – a deliberate juxtaposition to the character of the original home. While unified by a common narrative, each space offers idiosyncrasies that elevate the experience of the home to be joyful, relaxed and fun. The front of the home has been opened up to create a formal living room with a cosy library for the client’s impressive collection of graphic novels. In the main living and entertaining area, we replaced an imposing mesh screen with a finely articulated steel balustrade, opening up this critical area. The clients’ love of colour and collectable 1960s furniture can be seen in the iconic furniture pieces in brave upholsteries and bold colour accents. Sculptural light fittings give a sense of whimsy and a contemporary take on the home’s original ornate pendants. The clients adore what we’ve created. The generous entertainment space allows them to host small or large gatherings, while the eclectic nature of the home reflects their lifestyle, interests and aesthetic sensibilities completely. It’s now a place that’s truly their own.
