REDRAWING THE CENTRE
ith artistic direction from Brook Andrew, the 22nd Biennale of Sydney has been realised as a global assembly of First Nations voices under the title NIRIN. Meaning ‘edge’ in the Wiradjuri language of the artist’s mother’s Nation, the word has broader significance than its English translation suggests. “NIRIN is not a periphery, it is our centre, and it expresses dynamic existing and ancient practices,” says Brook. “It is a journey driven (still, below) and Pakistani-American Huma Bhabha’s sculptures (far right) at the MCA, and (right) by Siksika Nation artist Adrian Stimson at Campbelltown Arts Centre. March 14-June 8.
