Obituaries

JOHN BAKAY, a minor leaguer who played in the Georgia-Florida League, Western Association and Piedmont League for the Cardinals organization from 1941-42 and 1946-47, died Jan. 15 in Belleville, Ill. He was 96.

LEON “LEE” BERAN, a minor league righthanded reliever who played for the Pirates organization from 1951-52 and in ’55, died March 20 in Emporia, Kan. He was 87.

JAMES “JIM” BERNARDO, a minor leaguer who played in the Coastal Plain League for the Cardinals organization in 1952, died March 14 in DuBois, Pa. He was 85.

RICHARD “DICK” BOLLI, a righthander who pitched in the Appalachian and Sophomore leagues from 1960-61 and in the California League in 1964, died March 13 in Farmington, N.M. He was 77.

GREGORY “GREG” BOOKER, a righthander who pitched for the Padres, Twins and Giants from 1983-90 and also later served as a bullpen coach, pitching coach and scout for the Padres and Dodgers, died March 30 in Elon, N.C. He was 58.

Drafted by the Padres in the 10th round in 1981 out of Elon, Booker made his major league debut on Sept. 11, 1983, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings. He made 161 appearances in the major leagues, finishing 5-7, 3.89 with 119 strikeouts in 264 career innings.
