Waratahs are instantly recognisable. The common name, waratah, is an Aboriginal word; the botanical name, , derives from the Greek , meaning ‘seen from afar’. There are five species from southeastern Australia, the best-known being from NSW, found) is from northeastern Victoria and there’s one from Tasmania (). They’re part of the Proteaceae family that includes banksias and South African proteas.
