My heart lurched with longing as I watched a pregnant woman ease herself into the seat in front of me on the train. Her back arched and her belly rounded, she looked glowing as she thanked the man who’d stood up for her. She was probably exhausted, with swollen ankles and a baby constantly jabbing her ribs, but to me, she was one of the luckiest women on earth.
It was May 2017, and since our honeymoon 10 years earlier, my husband, Andrew, then 39, and I had been trying unsuccessfully for a baby, suffering one miscarriage after another in a never-ending circle of pain.
