Timber beams

Timber, a vital structural element, has long been used to form door and window lintels, floor joists, roofs and, in early houses, the building’s frame. Beams may be hidden behind plaster, render or cladding; others are highly visible and are loved for their character and beauty, and are also important pointers to help unravel a home’s history.

Maintenance checklist

• Investigate signs of beetle infestation.

• Note timbers that have been cut or altered.

• Tackle rot and decay.

• Check timber is not taking up moisture.

• Deal with damp problems at source.
