Play fighting with my brother, Jonathan, 30, my granddad George walked over with a wooden shield and baton.

‘Why not give it a go with these?’ he said.

‘And this one is just for you,’ he smiled at me, placing the shield on my arm.

My granddad George, who is sadly no longer with us, was my rock growing up.

He understood me more than anyone else - he understood what it’s like to have missing limbs.

You see, due to a medical condition called Amelia, I was only born with my left hand.

As a carpenter, he’d lost part of his hand, so he always made me things to make my life a little
